Clans of the Forest Overview: Modes, Combat & Cats

Warrior Cats: Clans of the Forest is an officially licensed turn-based role-playing game set in the Warrior Cats world, built by Bamtang Games and published by Trailmark Games under licence from Coolabi Group, which has held the Warrior Cats rights since 2012. It launches on 23 October 2026 across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch and Switch 2. It is the first officially licensed Warrior Cats video game, and it is a one-time purchase rather than free-to-play.

  • Developer: Bamtang Games. Publisher: Trailmark Games. Licence holder: Coolabi Group (Warrior Cats rights since 2012)
  • First officially licensed Warrior Cats game - the only prior entry was a Roblox title
  • Four storylines written exclusively for the game by Erin Hunter, one campaign per Clan
  • Turn-based combat, three game modes, 75 moves, and no spells - depth comes from Stances
  • Unreal Engine, 50+ developers, in development since Q2 2025

The official tagline on the Steam store page: "Forge your destiny, defend your Clan, and live the life of a true Warrior Cat." The setting is the Lake Territories. Developer, publisher and licence details come from the Steam app record and the IGN interview.

What is Warrior Cats: Clans of the Forest?

It is a licensed adaptation of the Warrior Cats books by Erin Hunter - the series published by Coolabi Group, which has held the Warrior Cats franchise rights since 2012. In genre terms it sits as a turn-based RPG with adventure elements, and the structure is three modes: a four-campaign story mode, a run-based survival mode, and asynchronous online skirmishes.

The framing comes straight from the store page: you forge your own destiny, defend your Clan and live the life of a true Warrior Cat, in a world set in the Lake Territories. You play a Warrior Cat you create and name yourself, in a Clan you choose, and the campaign structure means four separate stories rather than one. The game modes page sets out the three modes in detail.

Who developed it and who is publishing it?

Bamtang Games developed the game; Trailmark Games publishes it. The licence comes from Coolabi Group, which has held the Warrior Cats rights since 2012 - which is why the franchise's own official site is running the game announcement, and why the books and the game share a continuity.

The production background is documented too. The team numbers more than 50 professionals, the game has been in development since Q2 2025, and it is built in Unreal Engine. Those are the kind of facts that are easy to skip and useful to keep, because they are the difference between an announced project and a game that has been in production for over a year.

Is this the first Warrior Cats game?

The first officially licensed Warrior Cats video game, yes. The only earlier entry in the Warrior Cats game space is the Roblox social roleplaying title Warrior Cats: Ultimate Edition, which is a different product with a different developer and a different relationship to the licence.

That distinction matters for more than pedantry. This is the game the franchise owner is promoting, the game the book author wrote four new storylines for, and the game with a publisher committing to six platform launches on one day. If you have played the Roblox game, be clear that everything documented on this site comes from this game's own press material rather than from the Roblox title.

What do we know about the setting and the story?

The game is set in the Lake Territories, and it carries four storylines written exclusively for it by Erin Hunter. Each Clan has its own campaign, with the publisher describing four full stories with distinct prophecies, rivalries, characters and challenges. Nine book cats appear in total, four of which have been named so far.

Alongside the story, the world layer is foraging, crafting, hunting and environmental puzzles, and the combat layer is turn-based 3v3 with 75 moves, Ancestor attacks granted by StarClan, and a Stance system that replaces spells. Our four Clans page covers the four campaigns and the six locations, and our combat page covers what the Stance system actually means.

The scale behind the licence is worth a line of its own: Coolabi reports more than 200 million books sold and more than 700 million plays for the Warrior Cats Roblox game, and Coolabi's Nick Cooke describes the franchise as rapidly approaching one billion plays. Coolabi has also described a separate animated series slated for 2028 - franchise context rather than game content.

What is confirmed, and what is still unannounced?

Confirmed, from the store pages and publisher material: the 23 October 2026 date and all six platform entries, the three game modes, the four Clan campaigns, the 75 combat moves and the Stance system, the cat creator, the Prophecy Pack DLC, full controller support, Steam Cloud, and the price.

Not announced, as of 28 September 2026: any unlock hour, Steam Deck compatibility, cross-save or cross-play between platforms, Game Pass timing, achievement names - zero are published - a demo, boss names, per-Clan stat differences, recipes and material lists, and the names of five of the nine book cats. Our news timeline tracks announcements as they land, and the FAQ has the short answers.

Note
Why we are explicit about the gaps

It is 25 days from release. Publishing a page that quietly fills the gaps is how a guide site ends up confidently wrong on launch day. Where the answer is "not announced", that is the answer, and we would rather say so than invent a number to fill the space.
