Clans of the Forest Multiplayer, Skirmish & Cross-Save

Clans of the forest multiplayer is asynchronous only - the game is single-player first, and the online layer is Skirmish Mode plus den visits, neither of which requires you and another player to be online at the same time. There is no real-time co-op. Cross-save and cross-play between PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch have not been announced, and neither has Game Pass.

  • Single-player first - Steam's category list leads with single-player
  • Skirmish Mode is asynchronous - battle other players online, not at the same time
  • Den visits are asynchronous too - visit a friend's camp and gift them materials
  • No cross-save or cross-play announced between any platforms, as of 28 September 2026
  • No Game Pass date announced - the Xbox store page carries no subscription label

Source of record for the online features: the Steam store page, which describes both Skirmish Mode and den visiting as asynchronous. Cross-save, cross-play and Game Pass are recorded as not announced - the absence is the finding, across the publisher's page and every storefront checked.

Is Clans of the Forest a multiplayer game?

It is a single-player game with asynchronous online features attached, and the distinction is the whole answer. Steam's feature categories are single-player, Steam Achievements, full controller support, Steam Cloud and family sharing - note that multiplayer is not among them. The asynchronous Skirmish and den-visit features come from the store's written feature list, not from a category flag. Wikipedia's infobox for the title records the modes as single-player and multiplayer, so the second label is accurate - it just describes something much smaller than the word usually implies.

There is no shared world, no party system and no real-time co-op. What exists is a mode where you challenge another player's setup and it resolves without you, plus the ability to visit a friend's den and gift them materials. Both sit inside the three game modes as Skirmish Mode.

Does multiplayer work in real time?

No. This is stated explicitly in the store description, which is why the word is worth pausing on: Skirmish Mode lets you battle other players online asynchronously, and visiting a friend's camp or den online is asynchronous as well. The store copy uses the word deliberately, twice, in the same feature list.

Asynchronous play in practice means you are setting up something against another player's cat and the result resolves on a schedule, not that you are sitting on a controller at the same time. For players shopping on "is it a co-op game", the answer is clean: it is not, and no plan has been announced to add that.

Is there cross-save between PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch?

Not announced. No storefront, no publisher page and no platform announcement has stated cross-save or cross-play between any pair of the platforms the game launches on, as of 28 September 2026. The game launches on six platform entries on the same day - see release date and platforms - but a same-day launch is a scheduling fact, not a save-interoperability one, and the two should not be read as one.

To be precise about the wording: this is not announced, which is not the same as not supported. The honest position until the publisher or a storefront says otherwise is that nobody outside the developers knows.

Is it on Game Pass?

No date has been announced. The Xbox store pages carry no Game Pass label and no first-party statement about subscription timing exists anywhere. This is also a case where the absence is the answer - the game is a one-time purchase at $29.99 or $39.99, and PCGamingWiki records it as such with no microtransactions. Our editions and price comparison covers what each edition costs.

What does Steam Cloud actually sync?

On PC, Steam Cloud support is confirmed, so save data syncs between machines on the same Steam account. That is genuinely useful - it means you can move a save between a desktop and a laptop without losing progress - but it is Steam-to-Steam. It does not carry a save to a PlayStation or a Switch, and it is not evidence that cross-platform saves exist.

For a player deciding how to buy, the practical version is: your progress follows your Steam account on PC, and whether it follows you onto a console is currently unknown. The hardware and controller page covers the one platform question that does have a published answer, and the FAQ collects the short answers in one place.

Tip
Skirmish Mode needs a den to visit

Gifting materials to a friend's camp means the den is part of the social loop, not just decoration. If you are planning to play the asynchronous side at all, the den-building loop - foraging and crafting - is the thing that makes it more than a battle screen. The beginner's guide covers the opening choices, and the cat creator covers the part other players will see when they visit.
